Shaving Time Off The Package Development Cycle Part II

Shaving Time Off The Package Development Cycle Part II

Closure Selection

Selection of the right type of closure is an integral part of package development.  It is difficult to imagine a jar of pickles, for example, having anything but a simple lug closure.  There are as many other types of closures, however, as there are applications.  They can be metal or plastic, depending on the product.  Squeeze mustard jars have a spout dispenser while many squeeze mayonnaise jars today have a wide slot for consumer ease of application.

Consumer safety is another important consideration.  Many retailers now require tamper-evident packages.  This may require a separate overwrap or adhesive seal, a closure that breaks a seal when twisted open, or some other method of security assurance.  Marketing may want aesthetically beautiful closures, but if it requires an overwrap for tamper evidence, then the intended aesthetic effect may be lost.  Even so, there are many choices available.

“This is where a packaging supplier like O.Berk can prove to be invaluable,” says Sirico.  “It would be almost impossible for a consumer product manufacturer to be aware of all the different choices available.  Because we deal with many different customers and so many different suppliers we can go directly to the source.  That’s why it’s so important to involve us early in the product development cycle.  By helping our customers make the right choices as quickly as possible, we can dramatically reduce time to market.”

Printing or Labels

Decorating - Multi ProcessPrinting on packages and labels is often used to communicate information on how to use and store a product as well as how to recycle or otherwise dispose of the empty container.  With pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic products, much of this information is required by government regulation.

The choice of how to display the information is up to the package designer, operating within the government’s layout requirements.  It can be either printed directly on the package or on labels affixed to it.  The path chosen, however, can have a significant impact on time to market.

“Because of our experience with so many different suppliers, we know the capabilities of each one and the amount of lead time they require,” says Nadler.  “Even when complex graphics are required, we know which suppliers can provide them on time and on budget, which is one more reason why we should be involved as early as possible in the development process.

Custom or Stock

Perhaps no other decision can have such an influence on time to market as the choice between purchasing a package from stock versus having it custom manufactured.  Many of our customers are amazed that even when they need unusual sizes, complex shapes or intricate graphics, O.Berk is able to find a stock source that can fulfill all or most of their requirements.

“By eliminating the need for custom manufacturing, which usually requires complex molds and special tooling, we can shave days, weeks or even months off time to market,” says Simpson.  “And the earlier we get involved, the more time we can shave from the entire process.”
