F.D.A. backs up 'currently authorized' uses of BPA

Plastics News reported on Feb 26 that a major U.S. Government Study released February 23 gave the "controversial chemical" bisphenol A (BPA) "clean bill of health".

The F.D.A. released a statement February 23 noting that while the conclusions of the study are subject to full review, the preliminary findings support the F.D.A.'s prior determination on the chemical's safety.

"Although a comprehensive review of this report, along with future data from other CLARITY-BPA research, will be conducted as part of our continued assessment of BPA safety, our initial review supports our determination that currently authorized uses of BPA continue to be safe for consumers. The report also builds upon the already extensive data collected in the FDA's 2014 assessment of the safety of BPA."

Plastics News Reports that "BPA has been widely examined for the past two decades, with some studies saying the chemical interferes with human endocrine systems, including at very low doses."

However, the most recent study states that many regulatory agencies do not consider B.P.A. to be a "credible risk to people" although this conclusion is fairly controversial and requires further review.
