Packaging Crash Course: How Can I Decorate My Tube?

Many options are available for decorating a tube based on your branding needs. Once you have chosen the type of tube and closure you would like based on the look you want, the barrier properties you need, and the shape, typically oval or round, you can begin creating and spec'ing artwork.

Extruded tubes are moulded to shape before being printed. They are sleeved onto a rotating rod to be printed, this functions much like a deco lug on a bottle or jar, keeping the tube registered in place as it moves through the deco process.

Laminate tubes are printed before being glued into a tube shape as the laminates can be decorated flat, much like a carton is printed before being die-cut and folded.

Regardless of the tube chosen, you will receive a dieline to place your decoration, much like the dielines used for bottles and jars.

When spec'ing artwork, it's important to keep in mind the processes available for each type of tube. We've provided a breakdown below:

EXTRUDED TUBES

  • Custom color foils and films
  • Silk Screening
  • Hot Stamping
  • Can be clear, frosted, or solid
  • Can be coated for a gloss or matte effect.

LAMINATE TUBES

  • Full-color offset printing
  • Silk Screening
  • Hot Stamping
  • Can be coated for a gloss or matte effect.

ALUMINUM TUBES

  • Offset printing
  • Base color tinted to show aluminum texture; solid white, pearlized, or clear finishes are possible.

When the project requires that more than one of these processes be used, Flexographic printing may be a viable option to ensure proper registration. Flexographic printing or “Flexo" allows for the application of multiple effects, including CMYK printing, Hot and Cold Stamping, and Screen Printing within one machine. Flexo machines can typically accommodate 7-9 passes, sometimes more.

Include how you would like your artwork's background color to be created. When working with laminate and extruded tubes, it may be possible to utilize a custom color resin or laminate to enhance the look of your tube and make it appear more seamless vs. printing the background color on a stock white laminate or resin.

Decorated closures are a great way to boost brand recognition and add a custom look to your product. Most closures can be molded in custom color resins or metalized in different finishes and colors. A hot-stamped design or band can add a classic twist to a modern closure. You can also experiment with the finish of the plastic closure itself; opting for a matte vs. shiny finish can make all the difference. Matching your closure to your tube can make your presentation seamless.

In conclusion, mastering the art of tube decoration opens a realm of possibilities for branding and product presentation. Whether you opt for the sleek precision of extruded tubes, the versatile canvas of laminate tubes, or the classic appeal of aluminum, understanding and utilizing the right decoration techniques can significantly enhance your product's market appeal. Remember, the details in the decoration and closure customization are not just an addition; they are a statement of your brand's quality and identity.
