Chemical recycling is an alternative or complementary technology to current mechanical recycling processes (like sorting and shredding). Chemical recycling technologies use heat, chemical reactions, or both, to recycle used plastic into new plastic, fuel, or other chemicals—creating a closed loop where plastics can be infinitely recycled to help reduce reliance on landfills.

Mechanical recycling begins when a consumer disposes of a plastic product in a recycling bin. It is a circular process in which plastic materials undergo rigorous sorting and cleaning before being turned into flake or pellet feedstock, much like from which they came. PCR PET is produced through the mechanical recycling process.

Because mechanical recycling does not separate the recycled material to its chemical form, impurities and colorants may remain after the plastics have been turned into flakes or pellets. These impurities can cause discoloration in PET plastics depending on the percentage of mechanically recycled resin in the finished part.
